Sycamore Canyon: A Red Rock Hike Without the Sedona Crowds

Looking for one of Northern Arizona’s most beautiful hikes without the crowds of Sedona? Put Sycamore Canyon on your list. Just outside Clarkdale, Parsons Trail #144 leads into a red rock canyon of towering cliffs, cottonwood and sycamore trees, clear pools and a creek winding through the wilderness. It feels like a different Arizona.
Hike details
- Trail: Parsons Trail #144
- Distance: about 7.5 to 8 miles round trip to Parsons Spring, though shorter hikes are well worth it
- Difficulty: easy to moderate, with rocky sections and creek crossings
- Best seasons: spring and fall
- Highlights: swimming holes, canyon walls, wildlife, shade trees and creek scenery
Directions
From Cottonwood, follow signs toward Tuzigoot National Monument. Cross the Verde River bridge and turn left onto Sycamore Canyon Road (Forest Road 131). Follow it about 11 miles to Parsons Trailhead.
The road is rough dirt and gravel. A high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended, especially toward the end. Don’t drive it after heavy rain.
Local tips
- Download offline maps, because cell service is limited.
- Bring plenty of drinking water and water shoes for the creek crossings.
- Watch for flash floods and never enter the canyon when storms threaten.
- There are no developed facilities at the trailhead.
- Check road and trail conditions before you head out.
Bring a camera and a picnic and enjoy the sound of running water beneath the canyon walls.
