Packing Snacks for Your Hike: Think Like an Astronaut!

High-altitude hiking is as much a mental game as a physical one, and nothing ruins the “vibe” faster than a heavy pack or a caffeine headache. To hike smarter, you have to prioritize caloric density and efficiency. (Obligatory medical waiver statement: It goes without saying that this is all opinion – and that you should weigh out your own dietary considerations and check with your medical professional before you eat any of these things)
The Weight-to-Energy Ratio: Thinking Like an Astronaut
When you’re packing for a day on the trails, every ounce matters.
- The “Bacon” Secret: Pre-cooked, shelf-stable bacon or high-fat jerky offers a rare combination of protein and necessary sodium. At 9 calories per gram of fat, it’s far more efficient than carrying heavy, water-logged snacks.
- Dehydrated Candy & Fruit: For a quick morale boost and easy-access glucose, look toward “astronaut food.” Freeze-dried candies (like Skittles or marshmallows) or fruit (strawberries etc.) are incredibly light because the water weight is removed, leaving you with pure, crunchy energy that won’t melt in your pocket.
- Nuts & Seeds: Macadamias and walnuts are the heavy hitters here, providing massive energy hits in tiny, lightweight packages.
- Jerky and Biltong: Protein is paramount when keeping energy levels up. Reach for jerky or biltong as quick ways to fuel your protein tank.
- Trail Mix: Yeah… it’s the name of our blog so we couldn’t avoid this one. Try sprouts’ bulk bins for all kinds of unique mixtures. Choose one with chocolate as a special treat during your trek.
Unique High-Energy Ideas
- Nut Butter Packets: Single-serve almond or cashew butter packs are mess-free and calorie-dense.
- Hard Cheeses: Think Parmesan or aged Gouda. They handle the heat well and provide a savory, high-fat break from sweet bars.
- Electrolyte Gummies: If you hate the taste of salt tabs, these chewables keep your minerals balanced while feeling like a treat.
The Caffeine Contingency: Instant Coffee
For those of us who can’t function without a morning brew, don’t lug a thermos. Flagstaff’s high altitude can exacerbate dehydration, so use premium instant coffee packets or caffeine chews. They weigh next to nothing and can be stirred into cold water if you aren’t carrying a stove. Look for brands like Swift or Alpine Start for a cup that actually tastes like coffee.
